Finally...safe riding for our older kids!
At the end of the school year my son was the only kindergartener still in a car seat. I know... bend a little on safety, right? It just didn't make sense to me, to pull him from his perfectly good Britax Marathon which would safely hold him to 65 pounds, especially when he was only 42 pounds soaking wet. So in respecting his desire to dodge embarrassment, while still trying to keep him safe, I began to research a new frontier.
In searching for the "perfect" booster seat I questioned one issue. How could a seat, which was not connected to the car in any way, protect my son? In my imagination, his little body would be squished between the seat and the belt in the event of a crash.. This did not make sense and I was concerned. I finally settled on two booster seats, one for each car; Britax Monarch (www.britaxusa.com) and a Recaro Young Sport (www.recaro.com). The Recaro seat teathers from the top and would assist in some form of stability during a crash while offering a 5 point harness option for my younger children, while the Britax seemed to offer better side impact protection. As peacefully as expected, I went on my way.
Then I found CLEK. This fabulous creation was the answer to my concerns. CLEK booster seats are designed to use rigid LATCH and provide the latest in booster seat innovation. Finally someone has created a safe option for
our older kids. The "Olli" is a backless booster and currently the only one available at this time (my son still needs a high back booster). But say tuned! CLEK will reveal its full back, rigid latch booster at the ABC juvenile show in September. This one definitely hits Sweet Pea's Favorites list!
Typically you can find booster seats which claim to safely hold kids over 30 pounds. Caution! The rule of thumb is 40 pounds and 4 years old at a minimum. Check the laws regarding booster seats in your state. Current legislation is pending regarding requiring all children under 80 pounds and 8 years old to be secured in a booster seat.
